E. Wachsmuth in 1898. This exquisite bird's eye view offers a unique perspective on Manhattan Island and its surroundings, showcasing the city's dynamic growth at the dawn of the 20th century. As you explore this map, you'll be transported back to a time when the Brooklyn Bridge stood as the sole connection across the East River, symbolizing the burgeoning metropolis's architectural prowess and ambition.

The map's intricate details highlight the iconic landmarks that define New York's rich history. From the bustling Battery Park at the island's southern tip to the stately City Hall and Park, each feature is meticulously illustrated, offering a glimpse into the city's past. Governor's Island, a strategic military post, adds a touch of historical intrigue, while Broadway, the city's lifeline, snakes its way through the heart of Manhattan, embodying the pulse of urban life.

Central Park, a verdant oasis amidst the urban sprawl, is prominently featured, providing a stark contrast to the densely packed streets and buildings. This expansive green space, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, serves as a testament to the city's commitment to preserving nature within its concrete jungle. The map's depiction of Central Park invites viewers to imagine leisurely strolls and vibrant gatherings in this beloved sanctuary.

The East and Hudson Rivers frame the map, emphasizing New York's status as a bustling port city. The waterways teem with ships, illustrating the city's role as a gateway to the world. This maritime activity underscores the economic vitality that has long defined New York, making it a hub of commerce and culture. The map captures the essence of a city in constant motion, where innovation and tradition coexist.

Attributed to the talented German artist Mathieu Molitor, this map was originally published for German schools, offering a European perspective on America's most iconic city. Molitor's artistic prowess is evident in the map's vivid colors and detailed illustrations, which bring the city to life. This historical artifact not only serves as a visual feast but also as a testament to the enduring allure of New York, a city that continues to captivate the imagination of people around the globe.

Streets and roads on this map

Broadway

Notable Features & Landmarks

Governor's Island

Battery Park

City Hall and Park

Brooklyn Bridge

Central Park

Historical and design context

Creation date: 1898

Mapmaker/Publisher: F.
