This map of Crete, produced in Amsterdam, showcases the island's geographical and mythological significance. Jansson, a master cartographer of the Dutch Golden Age, collaborated with notable figures like Ortelius to create maps that were both informative and visually stunning. This particular piece highlights Crete's central role in the myth of Jupiter, intertwining ancient tales with the precision of 17th-century cartographic science.

The map's decorative elements are a testament to Jansson's artistic flair. Adorned with a beautifully ornate cartouche, the map also features maritime vessels and a fearsome sea monster, bringing the surrounding seas to life. These illustrations not only enhance the visual appeal but also reflect the adventurous spirit of the era, when the mysteries of the sea were still largely unexplored. Such details make this map a true work of art, capturing the imagination of its viewers.

Geographically, the map provides a detailed view of Crete, showcasing its mountains, rivers, and other natural features. The island's boundaries are meticulously drawn, highlighting the cartographer's dedication to accuracy. The bodies of water surrounding Crete, such as the Aegaeum and Creticum Mare, are prominently labeled, emphasizing the island's strategic location in the Mediterranean. This attention to detail underscores the map's value as both a historical document and a piece of art.

The map also lists numerous cities and towns, including Cydonia, Gortyna, and Knossos, offering a glimpse into the island's rich history and cultural heritage. These settlements, some of which are renowned for their archaeological significance, are marked with precision, reflecting the evolving geographical understanding of the time. Jansson's candid acknowledgment of uncertain place names reveals the challenges faced by cartographers in an era when exploration was still expanding the boundaries of known geography.

Historically, this map is significant as it represents the intersection of mythology and cartography during the 17th century. It illustrates how early modern cartographers like Jansson not only mapped the physical world but also sought to capture the cultural and mythological essence of the regions they depicted. This blend of scientific inquiry and artistic expression makes "Creta Iovis magni, medio jacet insula ponto" a fascinating artifact, offering insight into the worldviews of its time and the enduring allure of Crete.

Cities and towns on this map

Crete:

Cydonia

Gortyna

Knossos

Hierapytna

Lappa

Lyttos

Polyrrhenia

Rithymna

Sybrita

Tylissos

Arcadia

Eleutherna

Inatus

Itanos

Minoa

Olus

Phoenix

Notable Features & Landmarks

Maritime vessels

Sea monster

Aegaeum (Aegean Sea)

Creticum Mare (Sea of Crete)

Africum sive Sybycum Mare (African Sea)

Mountains and rivers

Decorative cartouche

Historical and design context

Created by Jan Jansson in Amsterdam, 1650

Highlights Crete's mythological significance, particularly its association with Jupiter

Represents the challenges and limitations faced by early cartographers

Illustrates the blend of scientific and mythological perspectives in early modern cartography

Please double check the images to make sure that a specific town or place is shown on this map.
