Homann, a prominent figure in 18th-century cartography, was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and artistic flair. This map is a testament to his expertise, capturing the intricate geography of Malta and Gozo with precision and elegance. The vibrant colors and detailed illustrations not only serve as a visual delight but also offer a glimpse into the strategic importance of these islands during a time of naval exploration and territorial intrigue.

Homann's map of Malta and Gozo is rich with historical context, reflecting the islands' significance in the Mediterranean. The detailed depiction of Valletta, Malta's capital, underscores its role as a pivotal maritime hub. The map highlights the fortifications and coastal defenses that were crucial in safeguarding the islands against invaders. This emphasis on naval and trade routes illustrates the strategic importance of Malta in connecting various parts of the Mediterranean, making it a coveted prize for empires of the era.

The artistic elements of the map are as captivating as its geographical details. The decorative cartouche, adorned with allegorical figures, adds a layer of artistic sophistication. These illustrations, along with the depiction of naval themes, enrich the map's narrative, offering insights into the cultural and historical milieu of the time. The inclusion of the coat of arms of Malta further emphasizes the island's identity and significance.

Homann's use of relief, shown through sketches and hachures, provides a nuanced understanding of the terrain. This technique allows viewers to appreciate the physical landscape of Malta and Gozo, from their rugged coastlines to the gentle undulations of their interiors. The map's design not only serves as a geographical guide but also as an artistic expression of the islands' natural beauty and strategic importance.

The historical significance of this map extends beyond its cartographic details. It represents a confluence of geographical knowledge and artistic expression from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The map's vibrant colors and thoughtful representation of relief make it both informative and visually appealing, capturing the essence of the era it depicts. For collectors and historians alike, Homann's map of Malta and Gozo is a significant artifact, offering a window into the past and a testament to the enduring allure of these storied islands.

Cities and towns on this map

Malta

Valletta

Mdina

Vittoriosa

Senglea

Cospicua

Gozo

Rabat (Victoria)

Notable Features & Landmarks

Inset Maps:

Detailed inset of Valletta.

Illustrations:

Decorative cartouche with allegorical figures.

Illustrations depicting naval themes.

Landmarks:

Fortifications and coastal defenses.

Bodies of Water:

Mediterranean Sea

Mare Africum

Other Features:

Coat of arms of Malta.

Historical and design context

Creation date: 1788

Mapmaker/Publisher: Johann Baptist Homann

Themes and Topics:

Detailed political and physical representation of Malta and Gozo.

Emphasis on naval and trade routes, highlighting strategic importance.

Design/Style:

Relief shown using sketches and hachures.

Vibrant colors and detailed artistic elements.

Historical Significance:

Represents geographical knowledge and artistic expression from the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Please double check the images to make sure that a specific town or place is shown on this map.
