Foire-exposition, Strasbourg du 5 au 20 septembre 1931 by L. Greiner is a striking Art Deco exhibition poster that captured the city’s pride at the height of the interwar era. Designed to promote Strasbourg’s September fair in 1931, it celebrates the city’s architectural icon—the soaring spire of Strasbourg Cathedral—through bold geometry, crisp typography, and a radiant palette. The poster’s structured layout and elegant vertical emphasis embody the optimism, progress, and modern design language that defined European graphics between the World Wars.
This listing offers a museum-quality fine art print of the original poster, produced by The Unique Maps Co. on your choice of acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. We print with fade-resistant inks and preserve the original proportions, offering a range of sizes from intimate to statement-making. Professional framing is available in several finishes, and we’re happy to personalize your piece—add a special inscription, note the 1931 fair dates, or tailor margins to suit your space.
About the artist: While detailed records of L. Greiner are scarce, the signature aligns with a cadre of early-20th-century French illustrators who specialized in regional fairs, tourism, and civic events. Greiner’s approach—architectural silhouettes, simplified masses, and sophisticated type-image integration—fits neatly within the commercial Art Deco milieu of the 1920s and ’30s, when municipal committees and printers commissioned eye-catching posters to broadcast local culture to a broad public.
Why this subject matters: Strasbourg’s cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic design, anchors the composition and symbolizes Alsace’s deep cultural heritage at a European crossroads. The fair itself (5–20 September 1931) reflects the era’s civic boosterism—an energetic showcase for industry, craftsmanship, and hospitality that invited visitors from across the Rhine valley. In a single image, the poster balances historical gravitas with the forward-looking spirit that exhibitions and world’s fairs were meant to inspire.
Design and color you’ll love: Warm shades of orange and brown bathe the scene in late-summer light, while passages of deep blue and inky black carve out the cathedral’s silhouette and lend dramatic depth. The geometry is unmistakably Art Deco: crisp verticals, measured diagonals, and a clear, modern typographic rhythm. It reads beautifully from across the room yet rewards a closer look—ideal for anyone drawn to vintage European graphics, architecture, or the unique Franco-German character of Alsace. As décor, it pairs effortlessly with mid-century, contemporary, or eclectic interiors, adding both warmth and graphic presence.
This print makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who has lived in or traveled to Strasbourg, studied abroad nearby, or fallen in love with Alsace’s wine routes and timbered streets. It’s a distinctive choice for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings, or as a keepsake for someone returning from a European trip—an elegant reminder of Strasbourg’s skyline and the golden glow of a 1931 September fair.
